thanks to grow your own media (gyom), i have been liberated from the confines of my printer! of course screen printing is nothing new but the flexibility and ease of the gyom studio, has added another opportunity for hands on connection to my work. i’ve seen my work screened onto product before but outside of directing, i’ve been completely divorced from the process. i decided to utilize my time between freelance gigs creating my own home product line and that was going to require my manufacturing product from concept to final. however, that’s another post! this one is about gyom.
conveniently located in atwater village just five minutes out of downtown los angeles, gyom is a hidden gem. the basic class offered at gyom is only $80 for a single color one hour session. the beauty of this is that it’s a private session which allows plenty of time for q&a and focused attention on your project. after your lesson, you’re qualified to rent studio space for the low price of $10 an hour at a two hour minimum! tomas, the founder is also the instructor and his laid back energy smooths away any beginner nerves. the facility is neatly laid out and fully functional with plenty of other entrepreneurs working their game.
tomas and staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable with regards to the print process and also offer custom services for businesses that need larger runs. i crammed a lot into my three hour session but the results were professional quality prints hand pulled by moi! an absolute rush that i’ve been coming back for continually in the past few weeks. if you’re looking for a creative outlet or you’re an established expert on the hunt for a reasonably priced facility, look no further than grow your own media!
