the affair continues…

In fashion on September 27, 2011 at 12:58 pm

i have always wanted a shirt dress but could never find anything that i thought to be flattering so i can honestly say i struck gold with this vintage ethnic print dress from arizona based fashion by robert black.  the dress label says design thai and was hand tailored in bangkok.  a real standout aside from it fitting like a glove, was the fact that the beautiful elephant print was screened by hand.  the belt was in pristine condition, a rarity, and the knotted fabric buttons were a unique touch:

i have to laugh having been told in the industry that no woman wants to wear elephants on her body.  well, i beg to differ with this sweet number!

this second piece i found on a brief sojourn to palm springs two weeks ago.  after scouring through a few thrift stores, i finally struck pay dirt on my way to target in cathedral city.  i pulled into a parking lot to check my gps and when i looked up, i found i was sitting smack in front of one of the best vintage stores in town.

the back room was packed with the most beautiful, pristine collection of vintage 50′s, 60′s and 70′s clothing and accessories i had ever seen!  you could have left me with a case of champagne, locked the door and i would have been in heaven!

this beautiful halter dress is by alice of california and boasts the original tags.  these hand screened garments seem to be finding their way to me and the beautiful, vivid colors are just what i need as we head into so cal’s indian summer:

yet wait, this isn’t just a dress.  the left side of the garment has a solid blue panel containing a leg! what to call it? a jalter?  a humper? LOL, maybe not!  whatever it is, it looks good to me:

i feel like a solid gold dancer!

oh yes! and the two dollar bakelite trimmed lizard bag is present and accounted for.  having researched bags by varon online, i would have to say this pre-dates the 70′s:

so there you have it!  if you missed it, do not fret.  there will be another a current affair event in december so get on their mailing list to be in the know!  deets on fashion by robert black can be found at the bottom of this post.

staying au courant…

…with a current affair!

a current affair has struck downtown once again and is quickly becoming my go to for one of a kind elements of splendor!  at a time when there are so many mass collections of ho hum clothing coming at you, and we all become more frugal in parting with our dollars on “up to the minute” trends, i, myself want something that speaks to me.  something outside of the editorial magazines and fashion blaring blogs that spells out style my way.

free drinks, tireless d.j’s and all the vintage eye candy you could want in an art deco penthouse makes for a memorable saturday night!  as usual, i could barely get through the door without tossing my sweater and handbag to my ever so patient partner and bee-lining it over to the nearest rack.

before i even go over what i walked away with, i have to give kudos to the many fashionable femme fatales who strutted their stuff that night while looking to add to their collections.  the vibe was positive and boutiques that represented were friendly and passionate about sharing their love of vintage finds!  these were only a few of the highlights from last night’s show:

everything about this dress hit her figure in the right way.

this is a gorgeous loop fringed bag by jil sander:

beautiful pieced leather cross body bag which my photos do not do justice from “just say native”.

my personal favorite, this beautiful wool dress by lanvin:

heart stopping color and detail.

you can get caught up in so many styles and my mission was to maintain a sense of purpose and being able to edit down pieces that would fit into a functional wardrobe.  as impressive as some of the pieces are, unless you’re constantly on press junkets or swilling cocktails at red carpet events, you have to think smart to maximize your purchase.  i kept the alcohol and the shopping rush under control and came away with two signature pieces for my collection that really spoke to me:

this beautiful indigo print kimono dress came to me via tavin: concept boutique of echo park.  as envisioned by erin tavin, her collection was an homage to vintage americana with a global twist in an extensive grouping of denim and indigo.  the rustic almost homespun workmanship of her clothes stood out amongst the chiffon, georgette and brilliant flowers of lanvin, leonard, beene, etc.

and yes, i am as happy as i look!

i paired this one of a kind dress with my antik denim boots and a two dollar vintage bakelite trimmed lizard clutch i bought from a yard sale in the arts district.  my favorite thing about this dress besides the contrasting indigo prints is the level of detail found throughout. the cuffs, collar and hem of the dress are faced in contrasting fabric as well and the drape is unbelievable!

tomorrow i’m going to wear my other score which i’ll feature in my next post along with another vintage palms springs find and a vintage inspired dress with a modern twist!  hint: it’s all about vivid color, ethnic prints, and delicate embroidery!

niagara falls…

In art & design on May 16, 2011 at 3:57 pm

…in the palm of my hand!

i love surprises and my partner was sweet enough to grace me with this tiny vintage lighter pendant commemorating a tourist trip through niagara falls. i’ve seen mini lighters before but nothing this detailed. i’ve done a bit of research but can find nothing on the company. i did find one other on ebay but the listing ended the day after i got mine. i know it’s made in japan so i’m guessing pre-war but no later than the 50′s. one side says ‘prspect point’ (their misspelling) and the other side features rainbow bridge:

i love that the enamel is slightly inlaid, the salmon colored sky and gold tinged ivory clouds. the look is very arts and crafts movement and reminds me of some of the beautiful colors used in ephraim pottery and maxfield parrish paintings. think tiffany shades and greene and greene bungalows but the best thing about this little lighter is the fact that it still works:

…helped me add more vintage, boho styling to my palette. i’m a boho girl at heart which i almost hate to say because it usually conjures up a very narrow idea of what that term entails. for instance, the clean, prep with the funky twist tone of the prada spring ’11 line is a favorite of mine and stripes of all kind coupled with bold prints are definitely woven throughout my wardrobe for the early season. for me, boho is in the prints themselves and how they’ve been applied, add the right styling and it takes it right over the edge:

prada on the cheap: b&w tee, zara;  jaguar ring, noir; hot pink patent clutch, hobo international; damask bangle, juicy couture; combo pencil skirt, milly; multi stripe tee, h&m; neon pink skirt, free people; button down shirt, vintage; high waist shorts, h&m;

saturday’s spring edition of a current affair was a complete boon! held on the 11th floor of the cooper building, it kicked off at six with delicious cocktails hosted by pama + izze, a live dj laying down vibes for the shoppers and a vintage exhibit curated by david zyla. some of the creme de la creme of vintage retailers and private dealers were on-hand to showcase carefully curated collections that spanned from the early 1900′s through the 80′s. beautifully maintained finds by geoffrey beene, lanvin, chanel, commes de garçon, yves saint laurent, etc. sat side by side with lesser known names in both fashion, jewelry and other accessories. the admission was $10 but gilt city hooked it’s subscribers up with a $5 fee to the event.

i shopped with print and styling in mind for projects i’m working on this spring and summer and this little collection of color and print began to coalesce around a couple of pieces i purchased:

straw fedora, jcrew; creme floral blouse, joie; sheer floral kimono cardigan, vintage; floral scarf, vintage liberty of london; rhinestone swallow bracelet, miss ellie; czech glass button ring, vintage; brass geometric earrings, vintage; nautical themed necklace, kate spade

the blue kimono cardigan was a lucky find at $58 considering nicole richie’s winter kate collection features vintage inspired kimono’s for $200+. another treasured item was the liberty of london silk scarf. more people than ever are familiar with the name since last year’s collaboration with target put them in american households at an affordable price. the reality is, these scarves tend to start at £95 ($150) and go upwards from there and the proprietary prints are exquisite and highly sought after:

while not exactly vintage in the traditional sense, alkemie jewelry makes their mark by being an environmentally and socially responsible enterprise that uses 100% reclaimed metals in their jewelry line. their eclectic range of jewelry is driven by a passion for natural curios featuring nautical shells, bees, flora and fauna, textures, etc. the piece that stood out and made it’s way into my collection is the spiky conch ring that was featured in women’s wear daily:

the beauty of this entire event was the fact that all of the items had been pre-screened and cleaned beforehand. it can be a hassle digging through grubby thrift stores chock full of clothing that is questionable in it’s cleanliness and woeful in it’s range. although one would argue that vintage boutiques increase the mark up on the item to a considerable degree, it’s still worth it to designers when time and travel are tight. there are exceptions with estate sales and forays to flea markets but when you just want to cut to the chase, pop up markets like these are valuable and worth signing on to their mailing lists.

getting lost…

…at “i found gallery” was one of the best interactive shopping experiences of vancouver. inspired by some of the often expensive vintage jewelry i saw while exploring vancouver’s retail landscape, i wanted to take a chance at creating my own one of a kind heirloom piece and “i found gallery” delivered on everything i needed.

located on the bohemian flavored southern end of the main street shopping district, “i found gallery” is a beautiful open space full of glass cases housing the largest collection of vintage jewelry findings i’ve seen thus far. connectors, pendants, chains, clasps, rhinestones, buttons, etc. it’s all there for you to browse through for your own diy projects.

i have to admit, initially i found it daunting having no clue as to what i wanted to make and how i was going to go about getting started. after some reassurance, i was handed a little shadow box for loading up my goodies and off i went. i spent at least an hour gathering all of my bits and baubles planning a strategy for the necklace i was to make, most of the effort involving the actually engineering and balance of the piece. demmy gilmour (one of the founding partners) and her assistant, jen, were very patient and generous in their advice which made the overall experience less intimidating and more like hanging out with friends.

once i’d gathered all of my goods, i was welcome to take my place at the large wooden worktable and use their tools and at times, their know how to finesse my necklace into being. i’d chosen vintage brass chains, clip on earrings, a small woman’s watch, a little locket and other various charms which would have meaning for me. nice relaxing music played in the background as i worked with my magnifying glass and jump rings while gradually i forgot where i was and took pleasure in feeling the weight of the tools in my hand. every once in a while, demmy or jen would pop over to check in on my progress the interruptions being welcome and fairly unobtrusive. my thrill was in adding the final touches of the faux pearls and minute sparrow to the brass chain, accents to add visual interest keeping the eye moving. the final result is shown below with my zodiac charm necklace (top) and silk goddess dress.

the focal point in the top layer of charms is one of the vintage clip on earrings. the layer below, has a lyre shaped connector with the vintage watch, tiny brass spoon and locket. i combined two vintage brass chains to balance the necklace and to prevent the charm clusters from twisting. because the brass chain is made from links that twist, it was necessary to hang the second chain in the opposite direction to counteract the torque of the first. voila, stable pendants! at only $55 give or take a dollar or two, my efforts were far less expensive than some of the $300 necklaces i saw not to mention the satisfaction of having done it myself.

the other interesting aspect of all of this, is the small, tightly curated collection of vintage clothing in the center of the shop. if you’ve not got a silk goddess dress of your own to pair your work with, you’re bound to find a frock or blouse there among the goods. i found “i found gallery” the ideal place to let loose your creativity and rediscover your individuality. while there, make sure you say hello to demmy, a transplant from perth, trying to make peace with the wet wonderland of vancouver!
