…provides mucho inspiration for designers on the hunt for vintage visuals. i won’t lie. we managed to get in by the skin of our teeth as the shop was closing up for the evening and just managed to snag a couple of finds. located beneath the pikes place market, it is so characteristic of the location’s historical vibe featuring a storefront peepshow of the world famous giant shoe museum!

just a featured sample of the wonders that await:

what's not to love?

but the real take away are the two original silkscreen prints that my partner and i bought. being a long time fan of bill graham’s legendary fillmore concert posters, my partner was chuffed to find a silkscreen by the world renowned stanley mouse. after bill graham’s death in ’91, bill graham productions laid claim to many of the fillmore’s creative fruits thus making it difficult and quite expensive to obtain those concert posters. originally printed in 1967, the poster isn’t for one of the fillmore shows but for the first annual cosmic car show held as a benefit for the delano grape strikers:

this is from the second printing done by frank westlake, printer of the family dog avalon ballroom posters in the 1970′s. the evidence of this is in the ‘san francisco poster co.’ mark on the lower left hand corner. further research hasn’t turned up much info on the cosmic car shows so i can only assume that the first was also the last.

our second contestant is an original silkscreen done for a roger clyne and the peacemakers show. now i don’t know a thing about roger clyne but i know i’m feeling the poster and that was good enough for me:

there’s something about the flatness, the color combination and cowboy boots that i found appealing and reminiscent of the groovy culinary posters that hung in my family’s kitchen in the 70′s. channeling the great david weidman…. recently produced by sandusky bay poster works, this work is numbered 51/69 and is autographed by the artist. having visited the site, it’s difficult to get more information on who’s who but it’s definitely worth the visit to peruse the other galleries.

if you’re heading to the northwest and want to stop into old seattle paperworks and say hello, i’ve posted the vital stats below. for those who can’t get to seattle, don’t fret. technologically savvy, john and amy hanawalt, the shop’s proprietors, have a facebook page on which they post tasty cuts for your pleasure! as evidenced in this post, the hunt doesn’t stop with the image but opens up a whole new world of informative twists and visual turns.

lodgings fit for a queen…

In art & design, travel on March 1, 2011 at 11:00 am

…on our overnight sojourn to seattle, we were urged to take our night’s rest at the sleek hotel max. billing itself as an art hotel (350 paintings by local artists), it boasts several packages aimed at an array of guests from the “feel good package” for the civic minded featuring a charitable donation and tree planting, the “staycation” discounted for localites to the “gaycation” for same sex couples replete with specialty items for a more, ahem, intimate experience. as we were there for business first and foremost, we indulged in the artist king minus the extra goodies. quite comfy and quiet with a killer view in a corner unit, i was impressed with the helpful staff and best off, the creative graphics which personalized each room. the door to each room features a black and white themed photo graphic with tongue in cheek imagery reflecting the special touches found in hotel stay.

my favorite was the “queen sleeps here” and was lucky enough to get the matching key card:

i love the way they took a common emergency exit and made it more “visually” interesting with a playful eye chart:

how could i resist? my souvenir:

poetic pleasures of polish pottery…

In art & design on February 28, 2011 at 7:20 pm

…supplied plenty of visual candy when visiting the polish pottery place at pike place market in seattle, washington. located beneath the actual marketplace, i was dazzled when i walked downstairs and was met by an overload of beautiful old world prints and patterns! racks and tables were filled with carefully grouped clusters of crockery, pitchers, ladles, mugs and so on each arranged according to color and theme. i had the opportunity to speak with the enthusiastic owner who proceeded to give me a history of traditional polish pottery and crafts. established in 1950, ceramika artystyczna cooperative of boleslawiec, poland was formed to reignite the polish ceramic industry which had been halted as a result of world war II. the fine white clay which is used is some of the strongest and most durable in ceramic fabrication which beautifully sets off the earthy neutrals and bright colors of the hand painted glazes. many of the designs reflect traditional folkloric motifs of whimsical animals, graceful florals and decorative geometrics resulting in enchanting table ware fit for a fairy tale feast!

another feature of the shop not sold online is the handcrafted art of wycinaki, paper cutout. it became popular in the 1800′s as polish peasants used them to decorate their homes and as gifts for friends and loved ones. the intricate designs are painstakingly cut by hand and layered to create symmetrical floral bouquets, roosters, deer, birds, etc. many of the designs she showed me ranged from the simplistic to much more elaborate compositions.

please visit the polish pottery place to see more of their wares. keep in mind the online site carries but a fraction of what’s available in their shops and only a visit to the locations can actually do justice to seeing such an abundance in one spot. to learn more about the art of polish pottery, please visit the ceramika artystyczna cooperative website.
