bei’ru’s little armenia: a testimonial…

In music on February 21, 2011 at 9:04 am

…to the power of twitter. i’ve gotten a new follower via twitter and as always, i try to get to know a little about my fellow twitts and in return, perhaps follow back.

user name bei’ru: hmm, occupation dj/producer… well curiosity has done little to diminish the nine lives of this kitty so off i go to explore his website, home of the november 2010 release of ‘little armenia.’ one tweet and i get back tenfold in the shape of this dope album that encompasses everything i love about global music!

named after the armenian community of hollywood, this instrumental album takes rare armenian tracks and reshapes them into hip swayin’ grooves which are the perfect soundscape to a day in the life. there are some standout cuts, zepyur and hishe ayn ore for example, and all will be in heavy rotation on my playlist this spring/summer. being that he’s one of the left coast’s own, this cat makes me glad to be a native angeleno!

update: little armenia plus champagne and a historical biography make for a chill sunday.

and while i’m at it…

…these new goodies from anthropologie are killing me! this tea time chandelier by cake vintage is a capricious example of reusing vintage materials for a fresh purpose. each chandelier will be slightly different owing to the teacups and serving trays used.

and i’m so glad to see globalism staying strong. these comforters and quilts are a colorful relief to a lot of the minimalism and mid-century modern homes. i love those two styles but i prefer to just be eclectic and mix and match whatever looks good and feels right thereby getting the best of all worlds.

pakistani truck art…

In art & design, culture and lifestyle, travel on November 4, 2010 at 3:58 pm

…having seen a bbc report on pakistani truck art, i immediately jumped on the web to find more eye candy! these images are a potent use of color and an absolutely dazzling array of exotic animals, women, florals and geometric motifs embellished with chiming bells, coins and twinkling mirrors. i am in love! it’s like a psychedelic gingerbread house on wheels! i would dream of a small room covered ceiling to floor with these beautiful paintings, layered with velvet tasseled cushions and scented with my favorite dhanraj maharaja incense. the room would open onto a small courtyard lush with vegetation and alive with the warble and chirping of budgies. (courtesy of my own flock chirping in the background!) to see them taking it to the streets was unexpected and inspiring!
