creative wall coverings…

In art & design on May 4, 2012 at 6:00 am

…for commitment-phobes!

a new wall covering system by dutch company, ixxi, has me swooning over the possibilities of changing up my environment!  whether you’re a hands on creative or just in love with your instagram collection, you’ll find yourself moving into the realm of designer with this simple system.  tapping into your creativity, you can submit your own collection of images for a custom set or you can choose from their image bank to create enlargements, pixelated art or collages.

they will help you through the process of resolution, uploading the artwork and placing your order.  what you get is a collection of 20 x 20 cm cards printed with your selected work, ready to be connected using their included x’s and l’s.  that’s it.  without lifting a paint brush, you can perk up the boring wall of your rental residence or hang them as a lightweight room divider!

ixxi cards are synthetic matte paper which is waterproof, tear proof and uv resistant ensuring that your masterpiece has longevity and can be taken down and re-hung on whim.

pricing is reasonable and depends on the size and number of cards needed.  for instance, a collection of 50 cards at 20 x 20 cm (roughly 8 x 8 in.)  is €78,75 or $103.  photo documenting a wedding, birthday or other fun event and gifting these to a friend, loved one, etc. is such a unique and special way to commemorate time spent together!

…a sneak peek in midnight…

…and dawn.

i would love to have a powder room done in ‘dawn’.  i’m not quite sure how i intend to use these in terms of scaling the repeat but i promise you’ll be the first to know!

gettin’ busy…

…and making new cushions!

these are a gift hence the gold piping whereas the one for production will come plain.  feels good to be sewing but i need to get down to making new prints!

i think for the next version of these, i may tuft them with a covered button in the center of the cushion…

a hug and a kiss…

In art & design on August 10, 2011 at 11:17 am

…for the considerably crafty!

i almost wish i were into needlepoint because i would definitely jump on this!  as it is now, i have my hands full with working on my own projects but for those so inclined, this a sweet needlepoint kit created by emily peacock tapestry.  ms. peacock (i love saying that!) is a former graphic designer who decided to turn her talents and love of tapestry into these nifty little kits that include the canvas, woolen threads, color charts and instructions.  you will have to provide the backing, insert and pompoms but that’s the easy part.  my head spins to think of how long one of these would take and i’d be lying if i wasn’t considering hiring someone to do it for me!  still, if cross stitching is your thing, then what better undertaking than a handcrafted kiss?

for font’s sake…

…and a love of textiles, i have been working on a pet project for the past two months.  mind you now, this is just an itty, bitty project wrapped around an idea that’s been collecting dust in the corner of my mind for the past fifteen years or so. it’s just now that i feel i have enough know how, courage and yes, a dire need to branch out on something of my own!  the idea itself is one thing but so much research and development goes into the actual fabrication of the product which for me, has been an amazing learning experience! once i’ve got the breadth of the collection done, i’ll be sure to go over my experience with bringing my line into being and share my processes, successes and failures.

i’m now working on developing the next set of designs and fonts will figure in as an important element. one of my favorite sites is myfonts.com!  myfonts has a wonderful breadth of beautiful font packages for direct purchase and download.  the site contains a number of features and search tools that makes finding and compiling fonts an easy task. i have used other sites in the past many of which have the wrong foundry information, little or no licensing info and let’s face it, corrupted files.  myfonts posts all of the relevant info on each typeface as well as additional glyphs, ligatures, multiple languages, etc.  easy!

while studying at art center, i flunked out of my first typography class simply by not showing up. as a short-sighted illustrator, i couldn’t see the point. well art center was much more stringent regarding their foundation courses back in those days and i had to re-take the class this time with typography taskmaster nils lindstrom.  upon finding out that i had flunked the first time around, nils made a special project out of me and all typography was done by hand. grueling!  i still remember how he would smile at me over his spectacles as he handed my project back with a sheet of tissue paper corrections over it, ugh!  still, i have to thank him for making me go over everything twice and because of him, i have a deep appreciation of type and what font designers are able to do.

no, i didn’t go on to design fonts myself and i still have a lot to learn but that doesn’t stop me from exploring the finer points and playfulness of typefaces.  the curve and flow between thick and thin lines is so pleasing to the eye… that being said, here are a few that i found interesting below. be sure to check out myfonts for more.
