a current affair…

…helped me add more vintage, boho styling to my palette. i’m a boho girl at heart which i almost hate to say because it usually conjures up a very narrow idea of what that term entails. for instance, the clean, prep with the funky twist tone of the prada spring ’11 line is a favorite of mine and stripes of all kind coupled with bold prints are definitely woven throughout my wardrobe for the early season. for me, boho is in the prints themselves and how they’ve been applied, add the right styling and it takes it right over the edge:

prada on the cheap: b&w tee, zara;  jaguar ring, noir; hot pink patent clutch, hobo international; damask bangle, juicy couture; combo pencil skirt, milly; multi stripe tee, h&m; neon pink skirt, free people; button down shirt, vintage; high waist shorts, h&m;

saturday’s spring edition of a current affair was a complete boon! held on the 11th floor of the cooper building, it kicked off at six with delicious cocktails hosted by pama + izze, a live dj laying down vibes for the shoppers and a vintage exhibit curated by david zyla. some of the creme de la creme of vintage retailers and private dealers were on-hand to showcase carefully curated collections that spanned from the early 1900′s through the 80′s. beautifully maintained finds by geoffrey beene, lanvin, chanel, commes de garçon, yves saint laurent, etc. sat side by side with lesser known names in both fashion, jewelry and other accessories. the admission was $10 but gilt city hooked it’s subscribers up with a $5 fee to the event.

i shopped with print and styling in mind for projects i’m working on this spring and summer and this little collection of color and print began to coalesce around a couple of pieces i purchased:

straw fedora, jcrew; creme floral blouse, joie; sheer floral kimono cardigan, vintage; floral scarf, vintage liberty of london; rhinestone swallow bracelet, miss ellie; czech glass button ring, vintage; brass geometric earrings, vintage; nautical themed necklace, kate spade

the blue kimono cardigan was a lucky find at $58 considering nicole richie’s winter kate collection features vintage inspired kimono’s for $200+. another treasured item was the liberty of london silk scarf. more people than ever are familiar with the name since last year’s collaboration with target put them in american households at an affordable price. the reality is, these scarves tend to start at £95 ($150) and go upwards from there and the proprietary prints are exquisite and highly sought after:

while not exactly vintage in the traditional sense, alkemie jewelry makes their mark by being an environmentally and socially responsible enterprise that uses 100% reclaimed metals in their jewelry line. their eclectic range of jewelry is driven by a passion for natural curios featuring nautical shells, bees, flora and fauna, textures, etc. the piece that stood out and made it’s way into my collection is the spiky conch ring that was featured in women’s wear daily:

the beauty of this entire event was the fact that all of the items had been pre-screened and cleaned beforehand. it can be a hassle digging through grubby thrift stores chock full of clothing that is questionable in it’s cleanliness and woeful in it’s range. although one would argue that vintage boutiques increase the mark up on the item to a considerable degree, it’s still worth it to designers when time and travel are tight. there are exceptions with estate sales and forays to flea markets but when you just want to cut to the chase, pop up markets like these are valuable and worth signing on to their mailing lists.

lovely and alluring…

main street, mount pleasant

…the barefoot contessa boutique awakens the inner goddess in all of us. the ladies of contessa know their client and celebrate femininity with a palette of soft creamy beige and toast, blushed pinks and virginal whites accented with poppy, olive and the occasional vamp noir. i was in heaven! i appreciate the edgier rock chic and rebirth of eighties color brights and yet i love to soften my wardrobe with more of these girlier elements. one look at that chandelier and i honed in on this store like a guided missile.

that chandelier says: bonjour, ma chère. c'mon in!

first, the overall effect of the boutique redefines the idea of shabby chic making it less laura ashley and more lolita. the look is updated and polished with a deep appreciation of the french boudoir. indeed the few men who did come through with their lady friends, looked painfully out of place and you would almost wish for a bench outside of the door where they could sit keeping the interior illusion intact! sorry guys!

with plenty of twinkling chandeliers, brightly lit glass display cases, touches of antique tea services and furnishings, along with self indulging fragrances and glosses, the only thing missing was a glass of champagne and a plate of gold dusted ladurée macaroons to make the effect complete.

sweet temptations at the cash wrap

vintage curiosities

delicate floral teacups, decanters and silver plate for sale for those who wish it:

"well, i haven't had any yet, so i can't very well take more." - alice

i love the way crows hover about the racks lending an ominous air as though alluding to the danger that lies beneath seemingly innocent frocks. indeed, these clothes are the weapons of a woman’s arsenal and when she shows up in full femme fatale, you know she means business!

as far as the crow flies...

a selected fraction of the lovely pieces available for consumption. i had to acquire the bed jacket for layering over my lean denim flares and the blossom belt in black almost escaped my clutches until i saw a dress in another store and ran back to purchase. (the belt, not the dress!) the “cat on a hot tin roof” dress however, is giving me ideas:

"take care of luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves." - dorothy parker

no need to take ribs out for this, helena dear...

'then jump off the roof, maggie. jump off it."

of course they can’t have all of this gorgeousness without the cake toppers and two stellar examples were washington based, my mothers buttons and vancouver’s own (and an l.a. favorite) pyrrha. my pictures don’t even begin to do them justice so please treat yourself to their sites:

beautifully repurposed vintage findings

pyrrha: 19th century wax seal jewelry

to seal the deal, pick your poison from this trove of scented goodies featuring tokyomilk and mor cosmetics both of which fit wonderfully into the shop’s personae. my personal choice is tokyomilk’s dead sexy no. 6. delicious!

deep vanilla, exotic wood, white orchid and ebony = serious juju

mor: the name says it all

what? oh yes! the kiddies. not all vixens are tyke free and for those who are enfant blessed, there is a sweet, sweet corner filled with enough eye candy to make you wish you were! those little his ‘n’ hers sailor suits are killing me:

my friend is pregnant and i'm prayin' for twins!

wow, i knew i couldn’t even begin to cover all the of the wonderfulness this shop has to offer and i’m already itching for another trip back for more! very easy on the pocketbook, you can afford to take home several pieces without breaking your budget and the feeling of indulgence is absolutely priceless. many thanks to dana and the other lovely demoiselles for showing us so much hospitality and putting up with all of the “oohs” and “aahs!”

new whimsical textiles…

In art & design on January 31, 2011 at 9:40 pm

…i loved the berry sherbert color palette for spring. it has that seventies main street revival look to it…a funkier holly hobby styling reminiscent of what i wore as a little girl.

the hearts and vines print was inspired by a pinafore and dress set that clothed a life-size raggedy ann doll my mother gave me. i was four and, to my utter delight, she also made me a matching outfit!

the print to the left is a 60′s mod inspired beauty conversational/stripe featuring mascara wands and who doesn’t “love” a sweet little ditsy print?

farming in rio…

In art & design, fashion, travel on January 17, 2011 at 12:06 pm

…is not quite what this post is about! rather it’s about another retail experience at farm in ipanema. farm is an atelier in the zona sul specializing in modern clothing in vibrant prints and edgy styles for contemporary women. part of a retail collection, each boasts it’s own take on the overall farm concept that is tailored to suit each retail space. the vibe is definitely south american and deeply reflective of brazilian culture. if i could compare it to anything, it’s reminiscent of anthropologie in that it clearly defines a specific consumer segment and owns it. the experience is thorough from retail, to packaging and it’s online presence. (i’m actually surprised that anthropologie doesn’t have an app……)

my first impression when seeing the façade was of sweet nostalgia reminding me of trellises that were used in delineating living spaces in homes built in the 60′s. my parents had a trellis with graphic clover cutouts that separated living from dining room and i was heartbroken to see it removed (but thrilled to know that they still exist under wraps in the garage!). what seals the deal on farm, however is the beauty of the interior space. (pics, with the exception of the above façade, are courtesy of farm’s website.)

the beautiful finish of the wood paneling, wide open glass windows and ceilings and the tropical touches of grass baskets, cane furniture and larger than life foliage fully immerse you in this retail experience. shielding you from the bustle of the street, you walk downstairs into the store so that all that is visible of the outdoors is the outside plants and sky above, a neat visual trick that transports you into farm.

a sneak peek at some of the pieces from their upcoming spring collection:

i just love the fresh youthfulness and energy of this collection! please check the link back to farm’s website and blog for more brazilian fashion and a lovely slice of music. for those who want to take it to go, there is the farm app available here
