it’s never too late…

…to tap into your inner child!

so i’ve waited quite a while to visit some of the attractions in my own backyard.  i seem to vaguely recall a trip to the cabrillo beach aquarium at about the age of three or four.  what i remember most are the fantastic pair of little red pants with a repeated print of white sailboats and seagulls that i was dressed in that day! but i digress…

well, i got a call of the wild on saturday and nothing would do but to answer that call with an early morning inspirational trip to the aquarium of the pacific.  if you care about the oceans and global warming i would have to say it’s well worth venturing out (going early to avoid the sticky fingers and smeared glass) and i was blown away by the diversity of our waters.  my pics won’t do it justice but i am inspired by the beautiful colors and graceful textures.

fuchsia fish. who knew?

i have always been a sucker for sea dragons…

…and now, leafy sea dragons.

…if you are interested (i know i would be), i’m going to share some of the tracks i had in heavy rotation while in vancouver. it got quite ecclectic at times but there are stories behind some and behind others, just good times. there is a commercial in front of café tacuba’s video and it’s non-english but wait it out because it’s so worth it. promise! in order: lykke li, ratatat, café tacuba, jim sullivan, j ralph, glee, the horrors and nouvelle vague.

lovely and alluring…

In fashion, travel on March 10, 2011 at 10:00 am

main street, mount pleasant

…the barefoot contessa boutique awakens the inner goddess in all of us. the ladies of contessa know their client and celebrate femininity with a palette of soft creamy beige and toast, blushed pinks and virginal whites accented with poppy, olive and the occasional vamp noir. i was in heaven! i appreciate the edgier rock chic and rebirth of eighties color brights and yet i love to soften my wardrobe with more of these girlier elements. one look at that chandelier and i honed in on this store like a guided missile.

that chandelier says: bonjour, ma chère. c'mon in!

first, the overall effect of the boutique redefines the idea of shabby chic making it less laura ashley and more lolita. the look is updated and polished with a deep appreciation of the french boudoir. indeed the few men who did come through with their lady friends, looked painfully out of place and you would almost wish for a bench outside of the door where they could sit keeping the interior illusion intact! sorry guys!

with plenty of twinkling chandeliers, brightly lit glass display cases, touches of antique tea services and furnishings, along with self indulging fragrances and glosses, the only thing missing was a glass of champagne and a plate of gold dusted ladurée macaroons to make the effect complete.

sweet temptations at the cash wrap

vintage curiosities

delicate floral teacups, decanters and silver plate for sale for those who wish it:

"well, i haven't had any yet, so i can't very well take more." - alice

i love the way crows hover about the racks lending an ominous air as though alluding to the danger that lies beneath seemingly innocent frocks. indeed, these clothes are the weapons of a woman’s arsenal and when she shows up in full femme fatale, you know she means business!

as far as the crow flies...

a selected fraction of the lovely pieces available for consumption. i had to acquire the bed jacket for layering over my lean denim flares and the blossom belt in black almost escaped my clutches until i saw a dress in another store and ran back to purchase. (the belt, not the dress!) the “cat on a hot tin roof” dress however, is giving me ideas:

"take care of luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves." - dorothy parker

no need to take ribs out for this, helena dear...

'then jump off the roof, maggie. jump off it."

of course they can’t have all of this gorgeousness without the cake toppers and two stellar examples were washington based, my mothers buttons and vancouver’s own (and an l.a. favorite) pyrrha. my pictures don’t even begin to do them justice so please treat yourself to their sites:

beautifully repurposed vintage findings

pyrrha: 19th century wax seal jewelry

to seal the deal, pick your poison from this trove of scented goodies featuring tokyomilk and mor cosmetics both of which fit wonderfully into the shop’s personae. my personal choice is tokyomilk’s dead sexy no. 6. delicious!

deep vanilla, exotic wood, white orchid and ebony = serious juju

mor: the name says it all

what? oh yes! the kiddies. not all vixens are tyke free and for those who are enfant blessed, there is a sweet, sweet corner filled with enough eye candy to make you wish you were! those little his ‘n’ hers sailor suits are killing me:

my friend is pregnant and i'm prayin' for twins!

wow, i knew i couldn’t even begin to cover all the of the wonderfulness this shop has to offer and i’m already itching for another trip back for more! very easy on the pocketbook, you can afford to take home several pieces without breaking your budget and the feeling of indulgence is absolutely priceless. many thanks to dana and the other lovely demoiselles for showing us so much hospitality and putting up with all of the “oohs” and “aahs!”

smoking lily…

welcomes you!

…is a rare find in vancouver and hopefully an indication of more to come. my first round here in the green capital left me at a loss for shops that stock local designers and artists. several smart looking boutiques only seemed to carry the very designers that i see regularly stateside making my search for a breath of fresh air difficult. what struck me first, was the overall effect of the shop. smoking lily takes vintage style engravers illustrations and works them into homeware, accessories and apparel while the essence of that theme is carried out beautifully throughout the space. nothing is left to chance from the time stopping window displays, the clever hanging artscapes or the rustic touches of reclaimed wood and vintage sample cases.

this vintage child’s bed may have had a hard knock life at miss hannigan’s orphanage but i think it’s delightfully re-purposed with the slightly sinister effect of gaily trimmed insect motif pillows and heart stopping sheets:

i've made my bed, now i'll lie in it!

i’m sure “little glory” may not have had this in mind, but what a nifty reuse of old, unwanted books. if you could find a way to lacquer the pages and insert a halogen bulb in the middle, they would make for great, glowing pendant lamps:

"books are awfully decorative, aren't they?"-gloria, auntie mame

not for everyone but definitely noteworthy is the anatomically correct heart printed duvet set. like something right out of an edgar allen poe tale, this bedding is darkly charming and alluring provided there’s nothing hidden beneath the floorboards!

the idea of these sheets, haunt me day and night...

love the industrial touches!

now, i don’t know if the jewelry is designed in house but they definitely own the display. the addition of the wildlife elements grounds the collection and ties the theme together and although it can’t be seen, the textured wall coverings help to create additional dimension to the space:

a nod to their environmental roots...

a great way to display cushions...

oh smoking lily, you had me at:

that mary's all heart...

so on that note, please stop in and say hello to the lovely erin, who’s enthusiasm denotes in part what there is to love in vancouverites, and treat your eyes to this unique shop!

ye old seattle paperworks…

…provides mucho inspiration for designers on the hunt for vintage visuals. i won’t lie. we managed to get in by the skin of our teeth as the shop was closing up for the evening and just managed to snag a couple of finds. located beneath the pikes place market, it is so characteristic of the location’s historical vibe featuring a storefront peepshow of the world famous giant shoe museum!

the world famous giant shoe museum

just a featured sample of the wonders that await:

what's not to love?

but the real take away are the two original silkscreen prints that my partner and i bought. being a long time fan of bill graham’s legendary fillmore concert posters, my partner was chuffed to find a silkscreen by the world renowned stanley mouse. after bill graham’s death in ’91, bill graham productions laid claim to many of the fillmore’s creative fruits thus making it difficult and quite expensive to obtain those concert posters. originally printed in 1967, the poster isn’t for one of the fillmore shows but for the first annual cosmic car show held as a benefit for the delano grape strikers:

cosmic car show benefit 1967, stanley mouse

this is from the second printing done by frank westlake, printer of the family dog avalon ballroom posters in the 1970′s. the evidence of this is in the ‘san francisco poster co.’ mark on the lower left hand corner. further research hasn’t turned up much info on the cosmic car shows so i can only assume that the first was also the last.

our second contestant is an original silkscreen done for a roger clyne and the peacemakers show. now i don’t know a thing about roger clyne but i know i’m feeling the poster and that was good enough for me:

roger clyne and the peacemakers, sandusky bay posterworks

there’s something about the flatness, the color combination and cowboy boots that i found appealing and reminiscent of the groovy culinary posters that hung in my family’s kitchen in the 70′s. channeling the great david weidman…. recently produced by sandusky bay poster works, this work is numbered 51/69 and is autographed by the artist. having visited the site, it’s difficult to get more information on who’s who but it’s definitely worth the visit to peruse the other galleries.

if you’re heading to the northwest and want to stop into old seattle paperworks and say hello, i’ve posted the vital stats below. for those who can’t get to seattle, don’t fret. technologically savvy, john and amy hanawalt, the shop’s proprietors, have a facebook page on which they post tasty cuts for your pleasure! as evidenced in this post, the hunt doesn’t stop with the image but opens up a whole new world of informative twists and visual turns.
